Change of Status

Change Your Status in the U.S. Without Leaving the Country

We guide you from visitor status to student status — step by step — all the way until your classes begin.

Already in the U.S. on a Visit Visa?

If you’re currently in the United States on a B1/B2 visa and want to continue your journey through education, you may have options to legally transition your status.

At STEM Study Abroad, we help individuals:

  • Secure admission in SEVP-approved schools
  • Prepare complete documentation
  • File change of status applications correctly
  • Stay compliant throughout the process

What is Change of Status (COS)?

Change of Status (COS) refers to requesting permission from USCIS to transition from your current nonimmigrant status (such as B1/B2 visitor) to F-1 student status while remaining inside the United States.

In most cases, this requires filing Form I-539 with USCIS along with supporting documents.

Eligibility Requirements

You may be eligible to apply if:

  • You are currently in valid nonimmigrant status
  • You have not violated the terms of your current status
  • You receive admission from an SEVP-approved school
  • You can demonstrate financial ability to support your studies
